Your College and You

May 2012

Thank you for your interest in receiving breaking news and professional information from the Ontario College of Teachers.

Accountable to you

Attend our Annual Meeting of Members on June 7th and hear an accounting of the College’s 2011 actions to serve the public interest. It’s your opportunity to ask questions and receive answers about the College as it relates to you as a member.

Keynote speaker Jean Augustine, Ontario’s Fairness Commissioner, talks about the work of the Office of the Fairness Commissioner in ensuring that people are treated fairly when they apply to become licensed professionals in Ontario, no matter where they were educated.

Events get underway at 5:30 p.m. at 101 Bloor Street West, Toronto. Please RSVP to outreach@oct.ca.

Fore — the love of teaching

Play in the College’s annual charity golf tournament and you can help to support new teachers.

Join education leaders in a day of fun and fundraising, July 5th at Glen Cedars Golf Club, east of Markham Rd., north of Hwy. 7. Your $150 fee helps to fund scholarships that recognize excellence and promise in prospective teachers.

Register now as space is limited. Contact Karin Lang at golf2012@oct.ca for more information.

Save the Date

Mark your calendar now for the new College Conference at the Sheraton Centre Hotel in Toronto, November 21 to 23, 2012.

This conference, Inspiring Public Confidence, will bring together leaders from the regulatory world, educators, researchers and policy makers. Stephen Lewis, one of Canada’s most influential commentators on social affairs and human rights, and award-winning broadcast journalist Wendy Mesley, are the conference’s keynote speakers.

Watch for registration details in the upcoming issue of Professionally Speaking. For further information about the conference, call 416-961-8800 ext. 559 or e-mail conference@oct.ca.

Teacher education program enhancements

The Ontario College of Teachers and the provincial government are lead partners in enhancing the initial education people take to become teachers.

In its election platform last summer, the Ontario government committed to lengthening teacher education programs and enhancing content, with greater emphasis on practice teaching. A series of consultations with education stakeholders is now underway.

Congratulation Nitu Channa, OCT

We added ebooks to our library services and invited you to check out the collection for the chance to win a Kobo Touch eReader. Congratulations to Nitu Channa, OCT, a Grade 4 teacher at Russell D. Barber Public School in Brampton, who is currently on maternity leave.

“This is fantastic news. I don’t think I’ve ever won anything. I don’t own an eReader and I’m an avid reader,” says Nitu. “I began using the College’s library services fairly recently.”

To check out the collection of ebooks, books, journals and periodicals, available to all Ontario Certified Teachers at no cost, visit our library online.
